Cauda equina syndrome (CES) is a condition that occurs when the nerves at the base of the spinal cord are compressed. It can come on suddenly, and usually requires emergency surgery. Early diagnosis and treatment are vital for the best chance of recovery as, if left untreated, CES can result in permanent paralysis as well as incontinence.

This blog discusses Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES), a rare condition caused by the compression of the nerves at the very base of the spinal cord. The author, a solicitor specializing in spinal cord injury, writes about the devastating impact of a CES diagnosis and the need for proper rehabilitation to help patients recover. The blog highlights a lack of access to rehabilitation for CES patients and the ongoing failure to refer them to the specialist care they require. The author, together with a clinical specialist physiotherapist in spinal cord injury, explains the discrepancies in the referral process and the need for multidisciplinary rehabilitation tailored to each individual patient. The blog may help people with CES understand their condition and the rehabilitation process and encourage healthcare professionals to ensure patients receive appropriate treatment.
Earlier this year the Spinal Injury Team at Bolt Burdon Kemp hosted a series of free Women’s Health webinars in partnership with the Spinal Injuries Association. The series was called from “Menstruation to Menopause a SCI women’s journey” and as part of that issues of puberty, sex, parenting, ageing and the menopause were discussed.

The blog "Life after spinal cord injury – It’s ok to not be ok" discusses the mental health impact of spinal cord injury (SCI). With up to 30% of SCI patients showing signs of depression, the blog raises awareness of the lack of specialist mental health support available to SCI survivors. It highlights the importance of treating mental health as seriously as physical health and the various support options available including support groups, lifestyle changes, psychotherapy and medication. Anyone who has experienced an SCI, or knows someone who has, may benefit from reading this blog to better understand the mental health challenges that SCI survivors face.
